Mother’s Day adventure 2024

We were blessed with good weather on Mother’s Day last Sunday: the sky was a clear medium blue and the air was still; the sun was a little bright, but the humidity was low; and the temperature was in the comfortable low 70s. Grateful for such a fine May morning, we set off from the house at 9am and headed to Versailles, Kentucky, for an outdoor adventure in honor of this special day. David had booked a full tour for us on Rail Explorers in Versailles. On this tour, we were to explore the countryside landscape on old railroad tracks while riding on a kind of motor-assisted pedaling rail car. It turned out to be one of the most fun activities we have done in Kentucky so far. I would even venture to say that it was the most entertaining experience we have had in this state.

The full tour took us two hours and the old train tracks took us through some farmland, behind a couple of houses, even above a street and through the hills of Versailles. At one point, our rail car was right next to a gate to somebody’s farm. Somebody waved at us as they got out of their car at one of the houses we passed. We pedaled past a couple of old, abandoned train cars with a creepy, haunted feel about them. David pointed out to me a couch inside one of those rusty, gutted-out structures.

Here are some videos of the workers setting up the rail cars before the start of our tour and then of us during the tour.

About David and Lam

A smitten couple and loving parents in our early 40s. We have lived in 3 different countries together. We dream of living in a fourth country together after our children grow up. We love long walks in the woods, climbing mountains, boating, traveling, reading, and being together. Both David and Lam are old souls who love quietness and meaningful conversations in which we ponder the truth and mysteries of life as well as discuss philosophical and ethical matters. We especially like to enjoy the small pleasures of daily life.
