But My Love Brings it Back

Can’t remember when David wrote this poem, but we had it framed in 2012 and it has been displayed near me in all our homes ever since.

Here it is:

I never struggled so much as
when I was loving.
But my love brings it back.
I never saw myself wanting, giving,
and planning so much.
I’ve stuttered and fumbled and often
been a fool.
But when we first started, My Love and I,
I was set to capture that Love of Mine
whose attention and actions meant more than
any person
and whose anger and disappointment could bring
down my roof.
So we held hands and walked – past the happy,
the heartache, the greys and the sunsets and
we happened upon a forest of family. A garden
inside it we suddenly realized we had planted.
And we looked down and there were our hands
so lovingly tattered. Worked hard by planting, seeding and raking that very same garden.
We stand here in this garden with the sun
and rain and we smile for our happiness and
try to laugh away the rest. And my thoughts at
the first time we held hands are sometimes muddled,
but then, at last, My Love Brings it Back.
